Edgar Rice Burroughs

Edgar Rice Burroughs is renowned for his many novels of fantastic adventure. His first story in 1912 “A Princess of Mars®” is acclaimed as the great turning point of twentieth century science fiction. Featuring John Carter of Mars® as an interplanetary hero, it spawned future science fiction franchises including Flash Gordon, Superman, Star Wars and Avatar. His next major novel, also in 1912 “Tarzan of the Apes™” would decide his future. It was an astonishing success and Tarzan became the most filmed action hero in motion picture history.

A torrent of additional novels followed. There were stories about Venus, Apaches, Westerns, social commentaries, detective stories, tales of the Moon and of the middle of the Earth. “Pellucidar®” was included in a series of adventure stories all taking place “At The Earth’s Core™”, bringing to us legendary hero David Innes and the eccentric inventor friend, Abner Perry.

Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. was founded in 1923 by Mr. Burroughs to manage the rights to his literary works, one of the first authors to ever incorporate himself. The company has overseen every adaptation of his literary works in publishing, film, television, theatrical stage productions, licensing and merchandising. The company is still a very active enterprise and manages and licenses the vast archive of Mr. Burroughs’ literary works, fictional characters and corresponding artworks that has grown for over a century.

The company continues to be owned by Burroughs’ family and remains headquartered in Tarzana, California, the town named after the Tarzana Ranch Mr. Burroughs purchased there in 1918 which led to the town’s future development.
